A Well Designed Kitchen Makes for a Happy Cook

Kitchen Design

Whether you are considering selling your home in the near future or just want to get the most out of living in your home a new kitchen design is never really a bad idea. First of all your kitchen will often be the selling point of your home if you’re wanting to sell. Secondly, the kitchen is generally the heart of the home if your wish is to make the most of your enjoyment of your home. Most of my favorite childhood memories took place in the kitchen. Mixing batter and licking the beaters, holiday meals, learning to cook, doing homework as my mom cooked (or rather, attempted to cook) dinner. I even have great teenage memories of long phone calls with friends while washing dishes. This is the room that memories are built in. Of course you want the best kitchen design your dollar can buy.

The single largest expense in any kitchen is probably the kitchen cabinet. They are prominent features in any kitchen and probably one of the first things that visitors will see. After that would come flooring or countertops. Both of them can be expensive if you choose to go that route or simply look expensive if you are a savvy shopper. My kitchen design idea centers on the premise that many things can be replaced much easier at a later date than flooring. Once you’ve installed cabinetry and appliances, you do not want to have to deal with moving things in order to properly lay your flooring. If I were to choose one over the other I would choose the more expensive flooring initially and go with less expensive countertops that could be more easily upgraded at a later date.

Another way to make a kitchen inviting is to install a kitchen island. This works best than the older bars that separated the kitchen from another room in the house. Rather than separating the space, a kitchen design that includes a kitchen island brings the seating into the heart of the kitchen rather than isolating people to the other room. I always find a kitchen island to be far more inviting than a bar and I love the extra kitchen cabinet and countertop space it provides those kitchens that had neither a bar nor a kitchen island before.

A great kitchen design idea will open up the space that your kitchen occupies, invite visitors (to chat and assist in food preparation and clean up), and be efficient (ever had a kitchen where the dishwasher was across the room from the sink or the refrigerator and the stove couldn’t be opened at the same time?). I hope you find the kitchen design that works best for your needs. A well-designed kitchen makes for a happy cook!

Kitchen Design on a Dime

Kitchen Design on a Dime

If you ever hope to create a kitchen design for your home, there are many things you need to keep in mind. The first and foremost would be your budget. It is so very easy (trust me on this) to go into your local home improvement store and want one of everything, the best ceramic tile flooring, metallic ceiling tiles, Venetian plaster walls, granite countertops on the kitchen island, and top of the line appliances that would make Ivan Trump drool. Okay, so now I’m drooling. However, I have champagne taste and a budget that won’t even buy a decent can of beer.

My kitchen design idea has to be one that calls for prudence and perceived luxury rather than the expensive kind of luxury that I some daydream of affording (perhaps when the kids graduate college they will help me build my dream kitchen design). There are however, a few things you can do in your kitchen to give it designer jeans flare while wearing poor man’s pants. One way you can save a significant amount of money in your kitchen is on the kitchen cabinet. If you choose to buy new doors for your kitchen cabinet rather than replacing the cabinet you will save yourself a great deal of money. Fixtures and door handles are also a great way to make it look as though you have a completely new kitchen design.

If you want another great design idea, try a fresh coat of paint. This is a budget design idea that works great to change the entire look of a kitchen without going to the expense that more extensive changes would create. If you have the floor space, and a little money set aside you may want to build a new kitchen island. This will provide extra countertop space, which is oh so precious in a kitchen as well as a division of the often-limited space of a kitchen. It also divides the room so that if you have small children you can set them up on the opposite side in which you are working and let them have a project of their own. Islands allow for creative storage in addition to the extra countertop space which make them a good bet in any kitchen design.

No matter what your budget, changing your kitchen design can have a profound impact on the level of enjoyment you have in this room that you and your family spend so much time in. Even little changes to this room will have a lasting impact on your enjoyment. Good luck and have fun!
